Who or what are “the holies” in Ephesians? “Holy” is an adjective used as a noun, and it can refer to people, places or things. In most places in Ephesians “the Holies” is best understood as a reference to the heavenly Holies – a place up above the earth and the sky (lower heavens) where God made a place of dwelling with His heavenly creatures. That dwelling place has also become the future dwelling and hope of the church, based on His promise “before age-times”. We have no description, no photograph to entice us to this place of blessing – except that it is currently where Christ now sits. If being beside our Savior is not sufficient to draw us toward this unseen place, then what would be the use of God trying to employ other enticements, like the beauties He has endowed our present world with? Thus, we grasp this promise purely on a faith basis.
